Safest turn out times - Dr. Carol Michael Why is 2.30 pm the safest time to turn your EMS/IR pony out to graze? This seems contrary to previous advice but there is biological logic behind the findings of a ground breaking study. UK native grass species are 'C3' plants which are able to convert to 'C4' type grasses if grown in a hotter drier environment such as Southern France/ Spain/ Portugal. A C4 type of grass is six times faster than a C3 at photosynthesis making it able to adapt to high temperatures. UK native grass species are C3 in type because our UK climate is temperate, whilst previous studies have used a C4 grass to measure NSC which have a significantly higher NSC content in the evening than the morning. However C3 type grasses behave differently to C4 grasses during the spring and summer months, as the temperature/sunlight increases the C3 type of grass increases its respiration which actually uses up the extra carbohydrate which is why the NSC levels of native grass in the UK is lower in the middle of the day. Perennial Rye grass has been bred/manipulated to maintain a high level of NSC to provide the best nutritional support to milk producing cattle and our study confirmed that whatever the temperature or environmental conditions the levels of NSC hardly fluctuated therefore if your field contains rye grass there is no safe time as the WSC/NSC remains fairly constant throughout the day.

The hidden poison in modern grass species. Fructans have been a concern among nutritionists as being a cause of laminitis, it is thought they disrupt hind gut fermentation and many nutritionists recommend probiotics to promote a healthy microbial population. It is also thought that an excess of sugar and starch overflowing into the hind gut causes certain bacteria to produce more lactic acid as they multiply rapidly. The hypothesis is that the gut then leaks ‘laminitis triggering factors’ into the blood stream and also predisposes the horse to colic. However this may not be the full story as new information and figures hot off the press from Bangor University chemistry department have revealed some of the more modern grass species contain a dangerously high level of nitrite. Modern Perennial Rye contained more than 3 times the amount of nitrite than the older meadow grass variety of Fescue followed by Cocksfoot at 2.5 times the nitrite content. Nitrite kills gut bacteria and though horses cope better than cattle, an overdose will certainly kill off good gut bacteria causing diarrhoea and even worse will cause colic. Perhaps this inevitable toxic event is the gastro-intestinal trigger which eventually leads to laminitis? Both modern and older varieties of Perennial Rye contained more than the recommended safe levels of nitrate at 1-2% DM nitrate per day whilst the fescues contain hardly any. No probiotic will be effective against the complete Biocidal action of nitrite on the gastro-intestinal gut population. Owners of laminitis prone horses are recommended not to feed Perennial Rye (grass or hay) even soaked unless tested for safe nitrite levels and to also avoid Cocksfoot for the same reasons.

When horses are insulin resistant they almost completely intolerant to any food product which contains sugar, starch and also triglycerides which makes feeding them a complete nightmare. Even specialist laminitis feeds may contain hidden dangers for instance a low sugar chaff may contain the same amount of carbs as hay (even oat straw) and many use Soya oil to bind the dry fibre together which is very high in triglycerides, this together with the added percentage of sugar is sufficient to cause a reaction in some prone horses as they all affect insulin levels. It's always good to check with the manufacturer if you are not sure and you are certainly welcome to check with us if you are still concerned as we have analytical methods feed companies don't generally use.

Should you care? Fructans are a natural component of some grasses. Fructans are a storage form of fructose found in grasses that are tolerant of cool temperatures (cool season grasses) and in some vegetables and seeds. Like starch in plants/grains or glycogen in muscle, it is a storage form of carbohydrate. The major difference between starch and fructans is that the horse can digest starch to glucose in the small intestine. Fructans cannot be digested, do not produce a sugar rise or insulin response. They are fermented by the organisms in the horse's hind gut. Everyone knows that if a horse eats too much starch/grain it can spill over into the hind gut causing colic , diarrhea and laminitis. In 2003, it was reported that a type of fructan called inulin can do the same thing. It was proposed that this is the mechanism for pasture laminitis but there are several problems with this. The fructan used, inulin, is isolated from chickory root. Grasses contain predominantly levan and phlein. Inulin is a small molecule with a different structure from the heavier levan and phlein. It is fermented very rapidly and is suitable as a prebiotic, while levan and phlein are not. The minimum dosage of chickory inulin required to produce laminitis in at least one foot was 7.5 g/kg, or 3750 grams (8.25 pounds) for a 500 kg/1100 lb horse. A horse this size would eat about 10 kg, or 22 lbs, of food a day so 37.5% of the diet would have to be fructan. This may be possible in some specialized strains of ryegrass, but is much higher than what would typically be seen in other grasses. Furthermore, in the experimental situation the entire dose is given by stomach tube all at one time, while horses on pasture would be eating this amount over the course of a day. In the experimental model, all horses developed profuse diarrhea, fever and elevated heart rates. Finally, pasture laminitis peaks in the spring when grass is rapidly growing and abundant, but fructan levels are highest in the winter. On the other hand, a recent study found 89% of laminitis cases were related to hormonal issues, Cushing's disease and/or insulin resistance. A large pony field study of pasture laminitis also found insulin resistance to be associated with risk and cases were correlated with a spike in pasture starch levels with no fructan changes. In summary, the evidence to link pasture laminitis to fructans is limited, at best.

(By the way: grappig, jouw typefoutje, 'een paard dagen' - ik maak vaak precies dezelfde typefout!

Lente dus !
Onderwerp: Re: weer nieuws over gras di 18 feb 2014 - 8:34
